Eric Fischer has been
the Men’s water polo coach at Modesto Junior College for 12 years,
this year he takes over the women’s water polo team also. Eric and
Kurt Olson have decided to change the day to day operations to let
Eric be the water polo coach and Kurt is the swim coach. “It only
makes sense, we are mirroring what successful Division 1 colleges
do, water polo coaches coach water polo and swim coaches coach
swimming not based on gender. “ The coaches are developing a
stronger program to compete with the Big 8 Conference.
The Modesto Junior College women’s water polo team is having a great
year. Losing the first game of the year against Foothill (9-12), the
women have won 15 in a row! Getting revenge against Foothill the
following weekend at the West Valley Tournament, a 10-3 win, it is
only getting better.
The team consists of 17 women, 10 sophomores and 7 freshmen. The
team is being led by returning first team All-Americans Erica Crain
and Meghan Devlin, with much support in the goal by Kashi Tomicich,
Katie Vengris, Nicole Scudder and Brianna McSheely. Incoming
Freshman have set up to the challenge of improving their game to the
next level; Lauryn Lewis, Katelyn Van Ruiten, Haylie Selby,
Christian Saldana and Caitlin Denise. And a group of other talented
players filling out of the roster; Teiryn Decker, Desiree Lundgren,
Mikayla Walker, Lupana Morales, Anna Kreeft and Sarina De La Cruz.
The team is looking forward the Big 8 Championships at Delta College
on November 6-7. And hopefully continuing on the following two
weekends to Nor-Cal championships at West Valley and State
championship the following weekend at Golden West College in
Huntington Beach.
