Head Football Coach:  Sam Young

Head Coach Sam Young brings his 33 years of college coaching experience to MJC’s top gridiron spot. Young, a veteran coach, on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball, has been a physical education instructor at Modesto Junior College for the past 18 years. He is a native of Porterville, California and a product of the community college system. He transferred to the University of California, Davis where he received his bachelor’s degree in physical education. He later received his Master’s degree in “Sport Performance” from Sacramento State. Young started his coaching career in football and competed in track in 1975 at his Alta mater, U.C. Davis. The CAL Aggies are known for their football success, with an all time NCAA record for consecutive winning seasons. During Young’s tenure, the Pirates have gone to 5 bowls games. In 2007 the Football Pirates were the Golden Gate Conference Champions. In track and field circles, Young has also known coaching success. Over the years, he has coached two State Champions at MJC and one National Division II Champion at UCD.  “I see myself as an Educator who happens to work in the physical realm,” Young has stated. “ I think everyone benefits by getting involved in something that is bigger than themselves, and team sports provide this opportunity for our students.”  “ Success can be found in a strong work ethic that is rooted in paying close attention to detail”. “I’ve been blessed to be able to work with so many gifted individuals”.” My philosophy is simply to encourage students to be intense enough to get the job done, but be relaxed enough to enjoy the journey.” Young is single, and resides in Turlock. He enjoys fly-fishing and reading detective fiction.
