General Program Information

The veterinary technician program at MJC is currently being offered to students through the alternate route. Students are required to have three years experience in a clinic, in addition to our courses completed in order to take the state RVT exam.

Students with no prior experience in the vet industry are still eligible for the program, and can begin their work experience through our internship program.

The program is designed to take one year to complete if the courses are taken in the suggested order.

Courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or better in order to count for credit.

A certificate of completion will be given to each student that successfully completes each course. These certificates of completion are required when taking the state exam.

Program Mission

Vocational education for all levels and age groups of students interested in the Veterinary Technician Industry is the primary mission.

Primary Objectives

  • Provide approved course work that applies to the student goal of completion of the Veterinary Technician Certificate Program.
  • Graduates will meet the educational requirements for the California Veterinary Technician Licensing Exam.
  • Establish and maintain high levels of instruction and training in order to produce graduates with above average skills and knowledge in the vet tech industry.
  • Meet or exceed the demand in the area for highly qualified and competent veterinary technician employees.
  • Instill an innate pride and high level of professionalism in students so that they may carry on these attributes in the work force.

Program Expectations

  • A student that completes each course with a grade of “C” or better will receive a certificate of completion for the entire program.
  • Students with little or no practical experience should be enrolled in the internship or volunteer program in order to begin their experience hours while still enrolled in the vet tech program.
  • Guidance counseling and evaluations will be done annually to ensure the student is progressing adequately.
