The animal science program is designed to teach students about the production and marketing of livestock, poultry and dairy cattle. Students have the opportunity to pursue degrees and certificates in animal science, poultry science, dairy science, and dairy industry. The program combines technology, practical application, and experiences in animal science in preparation for the world of work and/or transfer to higher education.
Animal
laboratory classes and work experience play a vital role in this program.
Learning laboratory units which are located on the MJC West Campus include:
beef, dairy, poultry, sheep, and swine production units. These learning
laboratories give students the opportunity to actually apply the theory that is
presented in the classroom.
A
new and unique program offered within the Animal Science Department is the
veterinary technician program. Through this program, students can earn a
veterinary technician certificate and prepare for the standardized Registered
Veterinary Technician licensing test.
As an extension of the classroom, the animal science program offers many other learning opportunities for students to further develop their animal science knowledge and skill. Those activities include but are not limited to judging teams for Dairy, Dairy Products, and Livestock.
MJC
has a strong tradition of success in Livestock and Dairy Judging with many team
members moving on to successful judging careers at the university level. Judging
team members are heavily recruited by universities from throughout the United
States including Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, Chico, Cornell, UC Davis, Fresno,
Oklahoma State, Texas A & M, and Texas Tech, just to name a few. In addition,
the students enrolled in the animal science program exhibit livestock at major
shows throughout California and the United States. Other activities include
organizing and conducting project animal sales, dairy heifer replacement sales,
4-H & FFA judging contests, livestock proficiency days, jackpot shows, and more.
